Latin Me Tell You About the Greeks!

TODAY we are TALKING about ROOTS of the Latin & Greek VARIETY!

ROOTS! Whenever I first started teaching roots made me groan because how can they be fun! You know what!? So I made it my mission to make roots fun! AND don't you think your students would love roots more if they actually starting finding them and saw that roots aren't just a thing of the PAST. They are awesome sauce.

AND because I try to not to reinvent the wheel but for this one...I had TOO!

One OF my FAVORITE resources for TEACHING and LEARNING roots is membean.com and I have no idea how I came across it at all. BUT it's this treasure trove of all things that are WORDY. Which I love!

I have no affiliation with the site membean.com. I just stumbled upon this gem of a site and have to share it (just to clear the air). I don't subscribe to the website and everything presented below is FREE! Because teachers are broke and humble. :) Whew got that off my chest. So let's take a look!

This is the main page--wouldn't your kids just go gaga for those posters because they are SO COOL! I love the visualness of them!

How stinking cool is this--it's all so cool! I love the visualness of this and how it links words together.  Oh, and there are podcasts. How fun would that be to listen too to squeeze in some root word awesomeness? Pretty cool.

If you scroll down below the tree there are some really cool written histories about the words and a list of ten that have definitions written using the root. Sah-Weet!

Another favorite part is this one--I've included a few of these WORD MAPS! I could look at these for forever! I have my students use chrome books or we go to the computer lab and type in our spelling words and learn more about them!

I love all the words that my students add to their vocabulary from this!!!

I could have added a million of these word posters. Don't you just love these?

They also have a root of the day! Root! Root! Pretty awesome. This is just a glance at the website--there are other things to do and see and explore.

Fun a game by Scholastic http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/athens_games/gameGreekToMe.htm

Also let's chat about dictionary skills. I STILL think that kids need them and it's not painful for you to teach or boring for them to learn if they have guidance, direction, and engaging things to do while they are searching the dictionary! If anything it teaches perseverance!\

One thing that you probably dread is sending kids off to "hunt" in the dictionary--it never turns out quite like you think or with any results. AND it's FRUSTRATING at times. However, I've found that if my students have direction that things end up much better. I have these snazzy posters and word collections

You can catch these in my store (Beth Van) as well as some matching games that make for a great center or review!

No FEAR : Getting ASKED Questions on TPT (for SELLERS)

QUESTIONS and ANSWERS--it's the way the world works. Earlier this week I posted how BUYERS can best utilize the Questions and Answers tab and now I think it's time for SELLERS to see how they can best utilize it!

WELCOME TO THE FLIPSIDE!

Sellers!
Always answer customer questions! Between school, life, creating, blogging, and surviving it's easy to just let these get behind. Savvy teacherspayteachers customers look at this to see how responsive you are to questions and concerns. It's an important part of your store and let your customers know that you care!

Along similar lines keep your questions up! No matter what! When I first got asked a question--it was a customer asking if I could fix a typo and I was SOOOO EMBARRASSED! EEEKS! So I fixed the issue contacted the buyer and then quickly deleted the question. I wish I wouldn't have! Live and learn right? Getting asked questions is just part of it. SO embrace it.

All of the big sellers have typos too! Cara Carroll, Babbling Abby, Deanna Jump, Kate Bing, Teaching With A Mountain View, Kayse Morris...they all get asked questions and have typos so it is a-okay. They are all more than willing to help and quickly fix the errors and that's so important. One typo or two typos won't ruin your store! We all have typos because we are human!

Also, you know it's so hard to be the first person to ask a question! So if anything, keep your questions hanging around for that reason!

One of the most important things about the question tab...

It's a great way for potential customers to see how quickly you respond, how you handle situations, and how you treat your customers. I get excited when I see questions because it's another opportunity to work with fabulous teachers and help them out--printer issue, file issue, typo issue. Whatever it may be. This is a great way to gain customers and to show how important they are to you!

What have you learned about the question and answer tab?

No Fear: Asking Questions on TeachersPayTeachers (for BUYERS)

Whether you sell on teacherspayteachers or are just a purchaser...what do you think about the question tab? I personally LOVE it both as a buyer and as a seller. Here's how and when to use it!

If you are looking for something specific ask to be sure that it is exactly what you want! That is totally totally fine! If it doesn't maybe another seller does or the seller that you asked could whip up what you need really fast and post it. It never hurts to ask! I've been approached by a teacher to create something and turns out LOTS of other teachers wanted the same thing. WINWIN.

With the ebb and flow of the internet links gets messed around and pinterest plays tricks on us. A seller might still have that something in their store or it might be something that they posted on their blog. Have you even seen something on instagram (my personal fav), Facebook, or pinterest from a certain seller? Sometimes they don't have it in their store but your interest could light their fire to create it!

Sometimes you find something awesome and to keep the flow of things want to know if the seller has any other similar products in the works...they probably do! Sellers are happy to tell you yay or nay.

Many hours of work go into products and even though they are edited sometimes small mistakes slip through our fingers (just like text book publishers and authors of books). However, with teacherspayteachers a seller can quickly go in and change it and have an updated product posted super quickly. How awesome is that?! AND all sellers appreciate the help and other purchasers do too.

If you are having trouble downloading your file trying asking the seller! They may or may not be able to help you (most of the time it's the buyer's computer that is having the trouble). But let the seller know--and let them know if you get it to work. Often times if you are in a pinch they can email you the product and sometimes that's they easiest way. However, keep in mind that some products are SUPER large and can't be emailed because of their file type or size!

PRINTING however is a whole 'nother issue and the seller has no control over that! Usually printers are the part going haywire! Erica Bohrer at Erica's Ed-Ventures has a fabulous troubleshooting blog post that I recommend. She included just about every technical issue! Whenever buyer's ask me, I send them along to her blog for help! Teacherspayteachers also has a list of troubleshooting ideas as well. So ask if your product won't print but be prepared to do some work on your end!

AND last of all. Sometimes you can just drop a nice note buy a seller. Say you've already left feedback another nice note about how much you love their resources never hurts either!

NOW! It's time to go shopping! AND if you are SELLER stop by later this week for some tips that I have for YOU concerning your QUESTION and ANSWER section!

Your Tricks and Favorite Treats

Last night y'all. Everything was happening last night. Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, HTGAWM, Bones, Blacklist...thank goodness for weekends, fall breaks, otherwise I only catchup during the summer. And let's be honest #icantwait 'til then.

Anyways, inspiration struck and I decided to print up a small batch of Halloween Carols for me (and a few of my friends). How cute are they?!

Also, has anyone else encountered tons of broken candy corn? AND since I'm all about ratios how about some #realliferatioproblems. Since ratios, proportions, and percents are my LIFE right now...everything is a ratio, proportion, and percent problem!

6 full pieces : 11 broken pieces in one handful. How sad. But on the flip side--the broken ones had to be eaten. So it's a pretty happy deal.

Anyways, I hope your weekend has only tricks that you've planned and treats you'll enjoy! Happy Friday friends!

Spooooky and Bright!

Can anyone else believe that it is October?! Seriously! I hope you have a sweet Halloween costume in the works and the the Halloween crazies haven't presented themselves. If they have, the only solution I have is more chocolate for you. :):):)

Hopefully this will help more than hinder you Halloween spirited classroom. Here are some HALLOWEEN CAROLS for you and your students to rock out the entire month of October or, Halloween week, or Halloween day. I was usually Halloween week or a few days before the school celebrates! Sometimes I try my best sometimes to brace and prepare myself for the ominous sugar overload! Are you with me? Anyways, whether you teacher 1st grade or 8th grade (or any grade in-between) I can almost promise you that your kiddos will LOVE these. Alright, I'll promise! ;)

These are a great time filler on a day full of craziness, chaos, and candy...but they are totally engaging and fun. And FLUENCY anyone? This is a totally awesome way to do this! So Fluency TLC and Halloween Carols. (it might be stretching it but it totally works)!

Grab these--some are passed down, I'm sure they are from PEANUTS, all are from memory, and one is past class creation. All are to familiar Christmas songs! Woot woot! My class goes and carols to the younger kids and we bring them a treat (usually dumdums or something small) because I am all about #sharingthelove. Even if that means sugar. So it's a little in advance you can get these little ditties all practiced with your class just in time for Halllloweeeeen.

Do you have any favorite Halloween songs, poems or carols?

Teachy Thought

Hi! How was your weekend! Ours was fabulous and we enjoyed some fall-ish weather...if you can call it that--since we are in South Florida. This is one of my favorite quotes--and I am miserable at following it's advice! I know as teachers we are often put in hard situations--whether they last 5 minutes, a day, a week, or an entire school year! It's not always roses! BUT I think its so important to make the most of each situation and to somehow grow from the situation. BLOOM where you are planted--don't stay the same, don't just push through--BLOOM!!!! No matter what! Happy Monday!!!

LOVE!
