I'm Beth and this is my little spot on the internet where I share my favorite UPPER ELEMENTARY tips for teachers. From Math to Science to Reading to Writing to Leadership and creating a happy classroom....follow along this happy and all things "teachy" adventure!Beth Vanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18292640810940005676noreply@blogger.comBlogger104125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-48563534524280158.post-43802186069069401472020-02-29T20:01:00.000-08:002020-02-29T20:01:15.154-08:00Book Time! New Kid!Ah! Does anyone else get excited when the ALA announces the Newberry and Caldecott winners each year? I do! I've never participated in a Mock Caldecott or anything mainly because I'd just rather read the winner or winners--depending on how busy my book situation is ha!<br />
<br />
You can get a copy <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078R4MWFX/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1" target="_blank">here</a>!<br />
<br />
Here's the rundown on this years book:<br />
Jordan, a smart kid with crazy artistic talent, his going to be the new kid at a fancy private school. Yikes! It's always hard being the new kid. He is paired up with a friend to show him around and during his first day finds himself with Andy, not the nicest kid in school. Because he is quick on his feet, Jordan finds a nice friend group. Now while this is a surface skim summary, Jordan and his friend ___ struggle with the fact that teachers can never remember their names and assume their athletic abilities based on their skin color. There are in's and out's and up's and down's but the book portrays what it's like to be a regular African American kid in a rich white school.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
This year's Newberry Award Winner is New Kid by Jerry Craft and every page of this book eye catching and awesome! It is definitely worth reading. I am so glad that they chose this graphic novel (!!! what! what!) and I love the story.<br />
<br />
The main things that I love about this book is that they are<br />
1. SO FUNNY--so of course you are going to keep reading<br />
2. Relatable--Jordan (the main character goes through so many<br />
3. SO much DISCUSSION--this book is jam packed with things that need to be discussed in today's classrooms.<br />
<br />
I also spotted this at the book fair--so keep your eye out for New Kid--it's completely worth it and your students will love reading this Newberry book!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's a lot of building and creating and counting and pulling things that your students already know...just translating them into candy hearts--which we all know playing with candy is lots of fun.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ShR2PlHVroA/XkWTmFoPkPI/AAAAAAAAjjU/wdYmznzV4ZYDdKN87lwgakP9SL0EzkxYgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/CANDY%2BHEART%2BCHALLENGE%2BBLOG%2BPICS_Page_3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ShR2PlHVroA/XkWTmFoPkPI/AAAAAAAAjjU/wdYmznzV4ZYDdKN87lwgakP9SL0EzkxYgCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/CANDY%2BHEART%2BCHALLENGE%2BBLOG%2BPICS_Page_3.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's also a great STEM center or activity that can be done in groups or a rotation.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love that candy hearts are relatively not the messiest thing and are a great manipulative to have on had during the month of February.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And candy hearts are always an excuse to go to Target too--like we need another excuse, right?!</div>

We made it through Black Friday and Cyber Monday and we still have a few packages coming our way. So before it was cool we have been leaving treats on our front porch for our delivery drivers haha...before it all made the news. I know all of those men and women are up early and out late this time of year making sure all of our packages make it.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mNlvoYrbvwc/Xe6UebEcvMI/AAAAAAAAi6c/cxe_GnPqgagmOkYbU-Gmq_XYMTHG2dHigCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/Christmas%2BUPS%2Bbasket_Page_1.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mNlvoYrbvwc/Xe6UebEcvMI/AAAAAAAAi6c/cxe_GnPqgagmOkYbU-Gmq_XYMTHG2dHigCK4BGAYYCw/s640/Christmas%2BUPS%2Bbasket_Page_1.png" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I thought I would share our sign that we post with our treats!<br />
<br />
Feel free to download and sign your family's name--or leave it blank--and share with friends!<br />
<br />
It just been fun to surprise our postman and UPS gal that always drops our packages off and Fedex has been coming by too<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XsA6lMlAnZQ/Xe6UjPf-lUI/AAAAAAAAi6k/XACt8ElQFGEGd8loBcMz1s5i1WvbvTZ4wCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/Christmas%2BUPS%2Bbasket_Page_3.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XsA6lMlAnZQ/Xe6UjPf-lUI/AAAAAAAAi6k/XACt8ElQFGEGd8loBcMz1s5i1WvbvTZ4wCK4BGAYYCw/s640/Christmas%2BUPS%2Bbasket_Page_3.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's what we have found our people--yes, people who deliver our packages are totally "our people" love<br />
<br />
1. Cheez-it's and something salty<br />
Cheesy crackers and Doritos are the hot items in our basket! They haven't really been into cookies in the past. This year we are trying out peanut butter stuffed pretzels and twizzlers too--for something fun!<br />
<br />
2. Leave it out late at night<br />
I didn't realize this until we missed a delivery person but UPS is out delivering well into the night--I checked my email for packages and it arrived at 8 PM so leave your treats out so you don't miss a Christmas helper!<br />
<br />
3. Set it up early<br />
The month of December I see mail trucks out earlier than usual so before taking kids to school just set your treats out. Our local USPS guys are out early dropping off packages and then the regular mail comes later in the day.<br />
<br />
4. Restock! You don't need to set everything out. I set a budget for about $25 for all of the treats and things and just put a few things out for them to choose from. I rotate things so some of our same delivery people have some variety of snacks.<br />
<br />
<br />
Here is the sign! Just print and you are good to go. I laminated our sign to survive crazy weather--mainly just humidity and rain because Texas never really has winter!<br />
<br />
<iframe height="480" src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yfpiRcdy4-FgttA9P09lCwM4kC0u1fnn/preview" width="640"></iframe><br />
<br />
I know you and your family will love setting this up and all the delivery people stopping by your house will be so thrilled with a little treat during this busy season of the year.<br />
<br />
Please print and pin and share!<br />
<br />
Merry Christmas!<br />

Here's your gift guide for the kid that is more into art and creating than toys! Our daughter rarely plays with toys but can turn our playroom into a blizzard of an art studio in a hot minute. Just wanted to share things that we love for our budding artist because sometimes it's hard to find things that aren't toys! :) Merry Christmas!<br />
<br />
#1 <a href="https://www.amazon.com/OOLY-Pods-Watercolor-Brush-126-2/dp/B00JPJF9V2" target="_blank">WATERCOLORS </a>We are hitting watercolors hard this year! We need something more than the Crayola water palettes and this is paint set that we LOVE. It has all the colors and more and is perfect for the budding artist. Want an experience with this? Gift your child a water coloring class from <a href="https://www.simplifiedclasses.com/watercolorkids" target="_blank">Jones Design Company/Simplified Classes</a> and they will for sure be busy all Christmas break.<br />
<br />
#2 <a href="https://radandhappy.com/shop/color-happy-coloring-book" target="_blank">COLOR HAPPY</a> I love RAD and HAPPY. This coloring book is not your average coloring book. Lots of options on this site that I highly recommend.<br />
<br />

IT EXISTS. This paper is so fun and makes everything a masterpiece. It's out of stock but check back--I know our local teacher supply shop has it so I'm picking mine up from there this year. We've already gone through 2 packs since summer so I'd say it is a hit!<br />
<br />
#6 DRAWING BOOKS We checked these out from the library this summer multiple times and they are currently already wrapped under our tree (I get my elf-ing duties out of the way early). Hours of fun and I love that they are always a source of inspiration. You can find the comic book <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1943145393/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">here</a> and the mermaid and fairy book here<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's THE MOST wonderful time of the year! I just wanted to share out Christmas picture book countdown with you...and with a FREEBIE to help you countdown to Christmas Day! Whether you are in the classroom or wanting a countdown for your family at home this is for YOU!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0RR6VDYYsZw/XeqeQIMt0wI/AAAAAAAAi1Q/H-9NQWRXBWU-sPbTq5w6guRRWSBmbF1tQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Slide1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0RR6VDYYsZw/XeqeQIMt0wI/AAAAAAAAi1Q/H-9NQWRXBWU-sPbTq5w6guRRWSBmbF1tQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/Slide1.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But first a short story...Last year I lovingly wrapped every book for my daughter. As the Christmas seasons went on we starting going through unwrapping fatigue...my little girl got tired of unwrapping the books. Then, I needed a book for a school event and it was wrapped up so I was guessing which one it was to unwrap it. Man. It was such a bummer to have this fun thing I was so excited about fall flat.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fast forward to this year and I decided I want the books out! I love looking at the covers of the stories. Books are always festive and fun decor...right?! Sometimes, my little girl wants to read a book that might not be on the "Christmas book reading schedule" so UNWRAPPED CHRISTMAS BOOKS IT IS. Let them be free. I made this fun countdown for us to read every night. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It has been so nice!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love that we can read "Santa's Book of Names" whenever we want too--and however many times we want. Caroline can read "Fat Santa" whenever she wants too because sometimes she just wants to read the pictures--and she loves the pictures in that book. Also, the Jolly Postman is just so fun to play and read that it needs to be out all year!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Below is a freebie that you can print to countdown picture books throughout the Christmas season too.</div>

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-da8dwRpHMYk/XQJnNtWz1zI/AAAAAAAABcM/qgqMkjpb8vwKOlZHL5OAKRi7VxMXd8oIQCLcBGAs/s1600/build%2Ba%2Bshape%2Bblog_Page_5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-da8dwRpHMYk/XQJnNtWz1zI/AAAAAAAABcM/qgqMkjpb8vwKOlZHL5OAKRi7VxMXd8oIQCLcBGAs/s640/build%2Ba%2Bshape%2Bblog_Page_5.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Let's talk area and perimeter. More specifically about area and perimeter of those combined shapes, complex shapes, what ever you want to call them. </span></span><br />
<div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">I remember my first year teacher I was like "This is the same as finding area and perimeter of a square or rectangle but you just combine it". Well, the spelled recipe for disaster. Ha! We got it figured out but time sure does make it easier.</span></div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">So. This is NOT just the same as area and perimeter of "regular shapes". I'm always looking for fun ways for students to explore area and perimeter...less telling and more DOING.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Xho2NX2l1qg/XQJnKNOukCI/AAAAAAAABcA/33qUePpPCXYTf0-9YrV9hWnfGom0g8mYgCEwYBhgL/s1600/build%2Ba%2Bshape%2Bblog_Page_1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Xho2NX2l1qg/XQJnKNOukCI/AAAAAAAABcA/33qUePpPCXYTf0-9YrV9hWnfGom0g8mYgCEwYBhgL/s640/build%2Ba%2Bshape%2Bblog_Page_1.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">It takes a lot of breaking down of the shape to find area and perimeter--I have a blogpost about there <a href="http://www.theteachyteacher.com/2017/04/dont-let-composite-figures-eat-your.html" target="_blank">HERE</a></span></div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">But instead of breaking things down I think this activity is perfect because students are BUILDING, using their number knowledge, problem solving, demonstrating, and evaluating--all of the good things that you want them to do to find the area and perimeter of squares, rectangles, and complex shapes.</span></div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--LYkr7Lt50E/XQJnKGBHmOI/AAAAAAAABcU/F7_XGGZ_6lcBUTYtzXORxsWRTc6runYnACEwYBhgL/s1600/build%2Ba%2Bshape%2Bblog_Page_2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--LYkr7Lt50E/XQJnKGBHmOI/AAAAAAAABcU/F7_XGGZ_6lcBUTYtzXORxsWRTc6runYnACEwYBhgL/s640/build%2Ba%2Bshape%2Bblog_Page_2.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">I have them build using manipulatives but if you just want them to build shapes on graph paper or grids that totally works too. I have different sized grids that students can show their work on--#accountability. Area and perimeter works like that too.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YG4vxYdlKbY/XQJnNT3vASI/AAAAAAAABcE/if90urnfw_0_ZFQYU6lRFMVF9EmWREFUwCEwYBhgL/s1600/build%2Ba%2Bshape%2Bblog_Page_4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YG4vxYdlKbY/XQJnNT3vASI/AAAAAAAABcE/if90urnfw_0_ZFQYU6lRFMVF9EmWREFUwCEwYBhgL/s640/build%2Ba%2Bshape%2Bblog_Page_4.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">These "Build-a-shape" activities are perfect for that! Students read the task and try and build--most tasks are totally possible while other tasks test their area and perimeter knowledge. </span></div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222;">

AND especially a printable one? When I was a little girl I remember collecting all sorts of bookmarks from the book fair and on trips to Barnes and Noble. I am totally loving these printable reading bookmarks...and astrobrights paper made them extra happy with the bright colors.<br />
<br />
Just sharing here because I think they would make a perfect class gift this holiday season--well, and anytime of the year! Everything from Dinos to tacos are included...what could be better than that?!! Just print (laminate if you want) and go!<br />
<br />
How are you going to use these with your class? I'd love to know!<br />
<br />
Happy reading friends!<br />

Sometimes things get lost via word of mouth and forgotten after class meetings! Ack! I wanted a way for students to share their love of books with each other beyond those class meetings.<br />
<br />
I personally love when I would walk into a Borders (RIP) and there would be book recommendation cards by books...and now Barnes and Noble does the same thing.<br />
<br />
Translating that to the classroom is tricky because of TIME and SPACE.<br />
<br />
I've been using these book notes and they are EVERYTHING!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3-gF9P1WQbc/W5x2UaL-r1I/AAAAAAAAans/I1YTME9diTINPpXLKRDSpNDfXwIUM5cTgCLcBGAs/s1600/Slide1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3-gF9P1WQbc/W5x2UaL-r1I/AAAAAAAAans/I1YTME9diTINPpXLKRDSpNDfXwIUM5cTgCLcBGAs/s640/Slide1.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
They are so easy for your students to use! Just print, fold, and have students write their raving reviews about the books that change their lives. It's so easy to tuck the notes in books and fun to discover as they are starting to reading a book or looking for their next book to read.<br />

Do you teach and discuss reading genres? I feel like with the ever so popular 40 book challenge genre is a buzz word in education right now...and I love it! I think its so good that we get the opportunity to explore to books with our readers.<br />
<br />
Gerne is so important because it's a springboard into reading! I wanted to share some of my favorite tips and activities for teaching about reading genres and weaving throughout the curriculum throughout the school year.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WDCLRXlGg5s/W5vIhSE3jfI/AAAAAAAABYk/QPSmMWADT40YNZMvC8ashxDZJRMhZYdeQCEwYBhgL/s1600/Slide4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WDCLRXlGg5s/W5vIhSE3jfI/AAAAAAAABYk/QPSmMWADT40YNZMvC8ashxDZJRMhZYdeQCEwYBhgL/s640/Slide4.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<b>#1 Make it RELATABLE</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hVNLUnka5Ck/W5vJCoh-5kI/AAAAAAAABZY/WlkahzN45jQoyjVPnUW05MxqkiuYFa8WwCLcBGAs/s1600/Reading%2BGenre%2B3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hVNLUnka5Ck/W5vJCoh-5kI/AAAAAAAABZY/WlkahzN45jQoyjVPnUW05MxqkiuYFa8WwCLcBGAs/s640/Reading%2BGenre%2B3.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
First--the word genre is kind of fancy. But if you break it down and explain that it's really just a genius word for categories then it isn't that intimidating. Just about everything has categories...food, movies, music...and books too!<br />
<br />
My favorite tool that we use are genre notes and we use them throughout the year. As a class we <b>brainstorm keywords</b> that could be found in a book summary or events that happen in a book. We make a list of these key words that are dead giveaways as to what a books genre is.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4XE0LSwuNAo/W5vJWMN_GvI/AAAAAAAABaI/svikXY0KhaILKRRgBtzap8pyXkJpG-h4gCEwYBhgL/s1600/Reading%2BGenre%2B9.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4XE0LSwuNAo/W5vJWMN_GvI/AAAAAAAABaI/svikXY0KhaILKRRgBtzap8pyXkJpG-h4gCEwYBhgL/s640/Reading%2BGenre%2B9.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<b>#2 Make it Hands On</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NlCdNsOzXpQ/W5vIkMrW-rI/AAAAAAAABZM/vSAEvMNiZ5gKYFrJpM5nsEGuogCH6JHbACEwYBhgL/s1600/Genre%2BActivity.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="938" data-original-width="625" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NlCdNsOzXpQ/W5vIkMrW-rI/AAAAAAAABZM/vSAEvMNiZ5gKYFrJpM5nsEGuogCH6JHbACEwYBhgL/s640/Genre%2BActivity.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
If you are going to focus on genres we have to put books in the hands of our students. I round up chapter books and picture books and create <b>genre mystery bags </b>for students to sort, categorize, and discuss.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v8w9UieBES0/W5vIjzLLieI/AAAAAAAABZE/d4HI8BJL_SAWec7jRpEoc3y3j2ZsN0TyACEwYBhgL/s1600/Genre%2BActivity%2B2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="938" data-original-width="625" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v8w9UieBES0/W5vIjzLLieI/AAAAAAAABZE/d4HI8BJL_SAWec7jRpEoc3y3j2ZsN0TyACEwYBhgL/s640/Genre%2BActivity%2B2.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
There are so many ways to spin this activity! Sometimes I have students search through the books for a specific genre, sometimes they need to "gene-lize" all of the books. It's a great way to get your readers thinking and talking.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>#3 IRL Practice (In REAL LIFE)</b><br />
One of my favorite and super authentic ways to help students determine genre is to print up <b>Goodreads and Amazon book summaries</b>. You can as a class go through the summaries and highlight those keywords and clues...it's real life and real easy. After some class practice it's easy to then have students go through summaries on their own.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZnH46aMi7vI/W5vIivx7LXI/AAAAAAAABZE/DfDcAJTVjf85uogz2jqYaU6uedeCCUWeACEwYBhgL/s1600/Slide7.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZnH46aMi7vI/W5vIivx7LXI/AAAAAAAABZE/DfDcAJTVjf85uogz2jqYaU6uedeCCUWeACEwYBhgL/s640/Slide7.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
A bonus to this activity is often students read a book summary and they want to read THAT book. It's a great assessment but also exposes students to different books. Doesn't get better than that!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iMQxSUQ5sCs/W5vIhS49bmI/AAAAAAAABZI/9nbMfwGbDMQOW5qc3thM4I1q9oqmpnOlwCEwYBhgL/s1600/Slide2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iMQxSUQ5sCs/W5vIhS49bmI/AAAAAAAABZI/9nbMfwGbDMQOW5qc3thM4I1q9oqmpnOlwCEwYBhgL/s640/Slide2.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r2n3ZMm_CZU/W5vIgKX8FYI/AAAAAAAABZM/9hg9OzBoc6kp_nQT2bb3dqXmUGRlOI3rgCEwYBhgL/s1600/Slide5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r2n3ZMm_CZU/W5vIgKX8FYI/AAAAAAAABZM/9hg9OzBoc6kp_nQT2bb3dqXmUGRlOI3rgCEwYBhgL/s640/Slide5.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<b>#4 Talk the Talk</b><br />
<br />
If we are talking about it then your students will see the importance. When we are reading our <b>#picturebookaday</b> picture book you can bet that we are discussing genre. When students share some favorite books--you know that's the perfect time to ask and tell about genre.<br />
<br />
During guided reading/reading groups and book conferences have students share what they know! They can share events in books or keywords that they spot in their reading.<br />
<br />
Genre should be <b>a talking point </b>throughout the whole year. I love using these genre posters to write down books that students know in that genre. It's also a great resource if they are searching for a particular book to read in a certain genre<br />
<br />

I feel like each school year I go in with a goal to build my readers UP! Whether they are voracious readers or readers that aren't too sure that they really are readers. Isn't that what we all want? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To lift up and build our readers?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">YES!!!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I really can never contain my excitement but this has been a little project/brainchild of mine for the past few months that I've gotten to work on in-between moving and unpacking boxes. When I was in school I kept a notebook of quotes I loved, authors I couldn't get enough of, and thanks to one of my favorite teachers ever I kept track of all the pages I read. I adored this notebook.</div>

I added some <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Reading-Shelfies-and-Snapshots-Visual-Reading-Logs-2682446">SHELFIES and SNAPSHOTS</a> to my product this past week. There are TEN book shelfies, hashtag snapshots, and now a few picture books shelfies. Coming soon are genre shelfies too. I've had thiiiiiiisssssss much fun adding shelfies and snapshots this summer</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have loved getting requests and adding to this!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-z6Pzk8A6bFU/WZIA9j26yXI/AAAAAAAABSA/q45-mKM7UmQYjqpT0_xO4R6XNhEDBpeWQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/picture%2Bbook%2Ba%2Bday.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-z6Pzk8A6bFU/WZIA9j26yXI/AAAAAAAABSA/q45-mKM7UmQYjqpT0_xO4R6XNhEDBpeWQCK4BGAYYCw/s640/picture%2Bbook%2Ba%2Bday.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am a **little** bit stoked about this setup--scratch that SUPER OUT OF THIS WORLD EXCITED about this setup and the shelfies--talk about the ultimate accountability. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Have you caught any of the tutorials for printing posters at office max for about 3 dollars? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Click on <a href="http://www.officedepot.com/a/copy-and-print/document-printing/?cm_sp=CPD-_-featured%20categories-_-document%20printing%20services%20image">this link</a> and then scroll to "blueprints" and I printed an 24x36 poster and it came out beautifully! Be sure to click the fit to size box! Always look for a discount code too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As you read picture books students write in the titles and authors. There are 20 books for shooting for a goal of reading a picture book a day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Also added as a request was a genre shelfie for my fellow upper elementary and middle school friends!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I AM SO SO SO excited about this!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Over and out!Beth Vanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18292640810940005676noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-48563534524280158.post-7749261388971392462017-08-09T14:30:00.002-07:002017-08-09T14:30:21.702-07:00Thinking Up! Growth Mindset Quotes!Ah! I am so excited about this! I feel like there are a lot of people in the #keepthequote club...and I am one of them. It's gotta be a teachery thing too. We just love quotes.<br />
<br />
I've always been inspired by words that are put together to have the most profound meaning AND using them in my classroom but I've always wanted to do MORE than just keep the quote...I want my students to apply and analyze the quote and make it come to life.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U-7p62zQtuo/WYt8ZazEB1I/AAAAAAAABQo/2DUy0x76KxAX8b1eNCpjkwxjujU02mcjACK4BGAYYCw/s1600/thinking%2Bup%2Bblogpost%2Bpics_Page_1.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U-7p62zQtuo/WYt8ZazEB1I/AAAAAAAABQo/2DUy0x76KxAX8b1eNCpjkwxjujU02mcjACK4BGAYYCw/s640/thinking%2Bup%2Bblogpost%2Bpics_Page_1.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So here is Thinking Up! 10 awesome quotes with 10 unique reflection pages. Each quote is made so students can add their own flair and personality to it. Like each quote, the reflection sheets are totally tailored to each quote. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
AND since we are all about growth mindset the quotes follow themes of staying motivated, persevering, trying, not letting failure get to ya, and taking chances.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wUsLF5KCXBw/WYt8jWKfq3I/AAAAAAAABQw/j9DwVNRJFz8A7bTANfZkjrzc7f-m2zINwCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/thinking%2Bup%2Bblogpost%2Bpics_Page_2.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wUsLF5KCXBw/WYt8jWKfq3I/AAAAAAAABQw/j9DwVNRJFz8A7bTANfZkjrzc7f-m2zINwCK4BGAYYCw/s640/thinking%2Bup%2Bblogpost%2Bpics_Page_2.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think these are the perfect pick me up for students and teachers--and not to mention the discussions that each quote can lead to--endless possibilities.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Included are bold and black and white versions--just for you--and me! Because I love a bold black and white quote...on astrobrights ;)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Are you always on the hunt for books that your kids will be obsessed with? </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">This series is something that you NEED in your classroom...at least one book from the series.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2;">Not only am I obsessed with this How Big Is It? Book but students are too! Here are a few ways to use it in your classroom...and of course you should enjoy reading this book just for fun!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #222222;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2;"><b>Writing</b></span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2;">Just flipping through the beginning paragraphs you can't miss how catchy they begin! 15 different and quality introductions in one place...yes please! So I love to use this to teach drawing the reader in with awesome first lines/introductory paragraphs. Defineitly shows that nonfiction is awesome and there's no excuse for a dry beginning.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2;" /><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #222222;"><br /></span></div>

YIKES. Definitely not my strength so I used this as a fun review to convert measurements between the two systems--and since the answers are included...it doesn't get any better. I just washi taped over the measurements for students to figure them out!</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2;" /><div style="text-align: left;">

How is summer treating y'all? In the midst of a huge move this summer I found a little bit of time to read <u>Disrupting Thinking</u> by Kylene Beers and Robert Probst. Have you seen it? Have you read it?<br />
<br />
I feel like tons of my favorite instagram reading teachers were reading this book this summer.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Holy guacamole! </span></div>
<br />
At the beginning of the book this totally caught my attention:<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333;">"Seriously, as you finished the book you most recently enjoyed, did you pause, hold the book gently in your hands and say to yourself, ‘This time, </span><em style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin: 0px; orphans: 2; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; widows: 2;">this time</em><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333;">, I think I’ll make a diorama’?…Do you write summaries of what you read, make new book jackets, rewrite the ending, take tests over every text? Any text? <u>Do you want your reading level put on a bulletin board for all to see.</u> <b>Do you even </b></span><em style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-variant-ligatures: normal; margin: 0px; orphans: 2; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; widows: 2;"><b>know </b></em><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333;"><b>your damn reading level?"</b></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333;"><b><br /></b></span></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333;">I knew I'd get along great with this book. ;) </span></span><br />
<br />
After I read this my brain was on fire thinking of all sorts of ways to ignite passion and do exactly what the title says...disrupt their thinking. So many thoughts, so many quotes, so many things I can't wait to try.<br />
<br />
I resisted from highlighting it all..and took a few notes and underlined those things that SUPER jumped out at me.<br />
<br />
It's easy to say I am obsessed with this book and you will be too!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DARehfy29bY/WXihOFFOukI/AAAAAAAABPc/cTsmSvonP2Q4KD4jIMfpp0sfP_VbFcskgCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/disrupting%2Bthinking1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DARehfy29bY/WXihOFFOukI/AAAAAAAABPc/cTsmSvonP2Q4KD4jIMfpp0sfP_VbFcskgCK4BGAYYCw/s640/disrupting%2Bthinking1.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
The premise of the book is to disrupt our students thinking and get them actually caring about what they are reading. FIRST as teacher though we need to make sure it is relevant to them. There are several strategies shared in the book about HOW to get students to think more! Check it out on Amazon <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Disrupting-Thinking-Why-Read-Matters/dp/1338132903">here</a>!<br />
<br />
CREATING A COMMUNITY OF READERS<br />
One of my favorite quotes from disrupting thinking says, "Reading gives us an opportunity to have an intimate conversation with the text, with the author, with oneself, and then ultimately with others." (p.43) Isn't this so true!?<br />
<br />
I really want to give my readers more time to talk and to become connected with what they are reading. So many thoughts and emotions swirl around when I read a book---so my students are having those experiences too. Talking and sharing is vital to reading...and scaffolding a reading community is totally necessary.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Xm8wzQQ1C04/WXihnfNI1kI/AAAAAAAABPk/MB_122qN2IoxNo4AFwv7NJg9ldk3bZRnACK4BGAYYCw/s1600/disrupting%2Bthinking%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Xm8wzQQ1C04/WXihnfNI1kI/AAAAAAAABPk/MB_122qN2IoxNo4AFwv7NJg9ldk3bZRnACK4BGAYYCw/s640/disrupting%2Bthinking%2B2.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
RELEVANCE REIGNS<br />
Our students want something that MOVES them. It's easy to want to capture kids attention with the funny books or exciting books but I've found once May rolls around the books like Wonder", "Out of My Mind", "Al Capone Does My Shirts", and "Mockingbird" are wildly hailed as the best books that we read all year.<br />
<br />
Over the ghost stories, adventures, mysteries....these are the books that my students take to heart. So I'm looking for more stories that move my students and stories that center around what they want to know rather than just entertain them. Keeping in mind that relevance trumps interest.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WAJMrBesZrI/WXihuKf5LiI/AAAAAAAABPs/XEiPqiwlQF8zPhLIrMvdjl5MgZ52CaMggCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/disrupting%2Bthinking%2B5.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WAJMrBesZrI/WXihuKf5LiI/AAAAAAAABPs/XEiPqiwlQF8zPhLIrMvdjl5MgZ52CaMggCK4BGAYYCw/s640/disrupting%2Bthinking%2B5.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
FOCUSED SILENT READING<br />
I feel like we all have some time set apart for silent reading but I am OBSESSED with the notion of calling it FOCUSED Silent Reading.<br />
<br />
There are no centers or activities to be done, vocabulary activities, or options to work on writing assignments...just pure FOCUSED reading. I feel like I could totally focus more on reading if that was the WHOLE point. Assessment of how that reading is done with just a few simple questions...and I can't wait to implement it with my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/EMOJI-Reading-Status-of-the-Class-2630040">emoji status of the class</a> as well! I think the quote below says it all.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-y_ThECCLSv8/WXih0UcuW2I/AAAAAAAABP0/nW4ubA_152IjeFwTJPzShgf9hHw1Mzx_QCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/disrupting%2Bthinking%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-y_ThECCLSv8/WXih0UcuW2I/AAAAAAAABP0/nW4ubA_152IjeFwTJPzShgf9hHw1Mzx_QCK4BGAYYCw/s640/disrupting%2Bthinking%2B4.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I had SO many takeaways and these three are just a snippet of everything that I learned. TONS of awesome graphics and charts are in the book which I loved to mix up all of the reading. AND studies. There were so many studies to back up the importance of reading. If you are looking for a quick reading PD to finish out the summer or boost your love for reading anytime during the school year Disrupting Thinking will for sure hit the spot!</div>

I was skimming through instagram a few weeks ago and everyone was teaching composite shapes...and complaining about how hard they are. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">Ummm...it's because they are totally hard!!!! </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">So many steps, lots of specifics, and lots of room for error makes it so difficult for us to help students to navigate how to solve for area and perimeter. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;"><br /></span>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">Here's how to not let composite shapes {{and}} finding their area and perimeter eat your lunch!</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-exS2bCSzQdw/WPfellE6GOI/AAAAAAAABOE/jB9BoRNQZm8mGwKQtBHQFuQ0EoZWncq9gCK4B/s1600/area%2Band%2Bperimeter%2Bof%2Bcomposite%2Bshapes%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-exS2bCSzQdw/WPfellE6GOI/AAAAAAAABOE/jB9BoRNQZm8mGwKQtBHQFuQ0EoZWncq9gCK4B/s640/area%2Band%2Bperimeter%2Bof%2Bcomposite%2Bshapes%2B4.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2;">
<b>Divide up the shapes</b></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2;">
I have seen this look of fear when students have to divide up composite shapes to find the area. It's like they don't know where to begin. Sides, area, numbers, units...forget about it! Just practice dividing up shapes sans measurements. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e-ZEKh1vTGE/WPfevbjOx7I/AAAAAAAABOU/LFS2oR1TxyIr-WsXwONPx9WMHuvlp5RcQCK4B/s1600/area%2Band%2Bperimeter%2Bof%2Bcomposite%2Bshapes%2B7.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e-ZEKh1vTGE/WPfevbjOx7I/AAAAAAAABOU/LFS2oR1TxyIr-WsXwONPx9WMHuvlp5RcQCK4B/s640/area%2Band%2Bperimeter%2Bof%2Bcomposite%2Bshapes%2B7.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2;">
Also it's important to talk about strategy of dividing up the shapes. While there really isn't a wrong way to divide up a shape there are defineitly ways to divide up shapes to reduce room for error. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2;">
You know that the few divisions there are the fewer smaller areas to add up. But sometimes it's best to divide the shape up a little more. It's dependent on each composite shape but it's so important to talk about why we are dividing the shape up and how to do it with the least possible mistakes to find the area. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KIM8xAV717k/WPfe0ij_CcI/AAAAAAAABOc/OBpAzelF8-AeGNkku3I19dYDjgGRn4KCQCK4B/s1600/area%2Band%2Bperimeter%2Bof%2Bcomposite%2Bshapes%2B8.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KIM8xAV717k/WPfe0ij_CcI/AAAAAAAABOc/OBpAzelF8-AeGNkku3I19dYDjgGRn4KCQCK4B/s640/area%2Band%2Bperimeter%2Bof%2Bcomposite%2Bshapes%2B8.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2;">
<div style="font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal;">
<b>ABC123 ALL OF THE SIDES</b></div>
<div style="font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal;">
You allll know that students get lost in perimeter in these composite shapes and what's the best way to hone in on that? <b>ABC123 THE SIDES. </b></div>
<div style="font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal;">
We assign each side a letter and write down the measurement in a quick made table. That way students know if there are any missing measurements. Thennnn they count the side to double check they've all been assigned. </div>
<div style="font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal;">
Some students prefer vertical tables and other horizontals...it's really up to them and how they ever feel organized. </div>
<div style="font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal;">
<div style="font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal;">
<b>BUILD SHAPES</b></div>
<div style="font-size: 12.8px; font-variant-ligatures: normal;">
I think this is my favorite part because it's so hands on and lends itself to so much discovery and light bulb moments. You know when you bring into "toys and treats" that your students interest and engagement is like EVERYTHING. SO BUILD. Make. Create.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1fcTQjH2vNo/WPfe7uPndsI/AAAAAAAABOk/oJnlC8-jRQk6j6Acz-7iuL-ZF4bV0W-ZwCK4B/s1600/area%2Band%2Bperimeter%2Bof%2Bcomposite%2Bshapes%2B9.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1fcTQjH2vNo/WPfe7uPndsI/AAAAAAAABOk/oJnlC8-jRQk6j6Acz-7iuL-ZF4bV0W-ZwCK4B/s640/area%2Band%2Bperimeter%2Bof%2Bcomposite%2Bshapes%2B9.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
I love bringing out the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Magformers-63070-Standard-Set-62-pieces/dp/B000VN5ZLA">magformers</a>, starbursts, saltines, cheese it's, post it's and any square shapes manipulatives and snacks. Target has some great small post-its that are square shaped. They are all perfect for finding area and perimeter. I am especially fond of startbursts because students can color code how they partition up the composite shape to find the area like in the picture below <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bESfEuuv6GU/WPffCPw3C9I/AAAAAAAABOs/n84GVcyQIB4QkDxvHgiNrer_61QumhdbQCK4B/s1600/area%2Band%2Bperimeter%2Bof%2Bcomposite%2Bshapes%2B6.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bESfEuuv6GU/WPffCPw3C9I/AAAAAAAABOs/n84GVcyQIB4QkDxvHgiNrer_61QumhdbQCK4B/s640/area%2Band%2Bperimeter%2Bof%2Bcomposite%2Bshapes%2B6.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Just a heads up to get at least three bags for enough of all of the colors...one isn't enough to build with or to snack on after ;)</div>

Like any math standard it's important that your students take ownership. I have students create their own...whether grids or tiles and find the area and perimeter of composite shapes. It's worth all of the work!!! I love this activity above because it is simple, it shows each students understanding.<br />
<br />
What are your tips for teaching composite shapes? I'd love to hear them! Because....ummm...they are hard!<br />
<br />
You can find all of these fun shapes <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Beth-Van">in my store</a> and the task cards <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Finding-Area-and-Perimeter-of-Complex-Shapes-1680043">here</a>. ((This is my composite shape will be posted this week!))<br />
<br />
Be sure to follow me by <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Beth-Van">clicking the green star</a> so you get my updates! I am posting some more composite shape fun stuff in the near future...that I am so excited about!<br />

Talk about an emoji equation pick-me-up! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We needed to jazz up some equation practice so I threw in a few emoji's to mix things up!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-J9ZGANOmgQI/WOObKfKZ2_I/AAAAAAAABNc/JqDSb2FCZncPagCxv9zzRcbA1RlJ--DdACK4B/s1600/emoji%2Bequations%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-J9ZGANOmgQI/WOObKfKZ2_I/AAAAAAAABNc/JqDSb2FCZncPagCxv9zzRcbA1RlJ--DdACK4B/s640/emoji%2Bequations%2B3.jpg" width="440" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Isn't this fun? One-step equations with all the emoji's. Plus it's a self checking activity with emoji answer cards--win win for you and your students. Ummm...and your students will totally love this.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rLY5Hmn_SX8/WOObOY71GeI/AAAAAAAABNk/-SyqLqniu6M9YyRIwDj1ctrZTYtmW74mgCK4B/s1600/emoji%2Bequations.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rLY5Hmn_SX8/WOObOY71GeI/AAAAAAAABNk/-SyqLqniu6M9YyRIwDj1ctrZTYtmW74mgCK4B/s640/emoji%2Bequations.jpg" width="440" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Simply print, cut fold, and go. The self checking answer cards with the emoji's on the front have the answer inside. To assemble or fold hamburger and the hamburger again...doesn't that make sense? Ha! Is there a better way to describe folding paper than hamburger and hot dog? I think not.<br />
<br />
As long as students don't get tired of emoji's...neither will teachers! They score automatic cool points Every. Time. I'm super stoked about the answer key because there are black and white emoji's to keep students on track with solving problems...I need to grab a picture of that!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<br />
I just finished "Scar Island" and I cannot stop thinking about it. If you teach 5th or 6th grade I cannot imagine a single students not liking it. It's suspenseful, fun, mysterious, adventurous, and full of so many things that make a book perfect.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LJKWbzVfJwE/WOBR7xLrxnI/AAAAAAAABNM/DjVg60drn2gpGynrAdCInX1NQk-iHWq0ACK4B/s1600/scar%2Bisland.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LJKWbzVfJwE/WOBR7xLrxnI/AAAAAAAABNM/DjVg60drn2gpGynrAdCInX1NQk-iHWq0ACK4B/s640/scar%2Bisland.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
You should read it! Really and truly.<br />
<br />
I am sending apologies out to the Universe and patrons of the Palm Beach library because I've held onto this book for so long...but I'm returning it ASAP because someone else needs to read. this. book. stat.<br />
<br />
Here's a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Scar-Island-Dan-Gemeinhart/dp/1338053841/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491096172&sr=8-1&keywords=scar+island">link to the book</a>. And I really loved this review from nerdybookclub <a href="https://nerdybookclub.wordpress.com/2017/02/16/scar-island-by-dan-gemeinhart-review-by-angie-moore/">here</a>. If you are looking for a good book blog to follow this is theeeeee best. You're welcome. ;)<br />
<br />
What have you read recently??? I need more books to add to my TBR list!<br />
<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OvMAKAgsIEY/WNxkqEAgD6I/AAAAAAAABMQ/uqdrX_Hu6bYEk9DMdcy8PqLfvkXw4hW3QCK4B/s1600/angles%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OvMAKAgsIEY/WNxkqEAgD6I/AAAAAAAABMQ/uqdrX_Hu6bYEk9DMdcy8PqLfvkXw4hW3QCK4B/s640/angles%2B3.jpg" width="440" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm back...sooner than I thought...and it's all because of <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Finding-Complementary-and-Supplementary-Angles-Task-Cards-and-Activities-642217">complementary and supplementary angles</a>!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I overhauled this resource and added some new things that are absolutely loved by students.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hQUvU21CoZI/WNxk-dTX4qI/AAAAAAAABMY/9wiRNYeEV949Ll787Rh_CNUnTTuRNlDOQCK4B/s1600/angles%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hQUvU21CoZI/WNxk-dTX4qI/AAAAAAAABMY/9wiRNYeEV949Ll787Rh_CNUnTTuRNlDOQCK4B/s640/angles%2B1.jpg" width="440" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
No matter what time of the year it is...and especially at the end of the year...I am desperate for review games. Are you? This angles matching game is perfect to show off angle sizes and dust off the cobwebs...even if you taught geometry/angles/complementary/supplementary stuff a few weeks prior ;)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dQaOtxJPEys/WNxlbJcBgAI/AAAAAAAABMg/rlYwWoaXvQsIYEp5FLIlG6GVcZ3eIwU-ACK4B/s1600/angles%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dQaOtxJPEys/WNxlbJcBgAI/AAAAAAAABMg/rlYwWoaXvQsIYEp5FLIlG6GVcZ3eIwU-ACK4B/s640/angles%2B3.jpg" width="440" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We have a few tricks for remembering complementary and supplementary angles but I love these I can flips...students solve and it's perfect to add to their notebooks for a quick reference and reminder.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rOoJBLDHu2k/WNxlwYfTJsI/AAAAAAAABMo/WgUFWdGc5McqccUlETKuuSoNhfbXMzFlgCK4B/s1600/angles%2B7.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rOoJBLDHu2k/WNxlwYfTJsI/AAAAAAAABMo/WgUFWdGc5McqccUlETKuuSoNhfbXMzFlgCK4B/s640/angles%2B7.jpg" width="440" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Ah! I cannot get enough of these!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IQJcHJcY-24/WNxl07GnSzI/AAAAAAAABMw/I42ud3PmHy4dcIAppKLHyQqPQ44k4CM7gCK4B/s1600/angles%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IQJcHJcY-24/WNxl07GnSzI/AAAAAAAABMw/I42ud3PmHy4dcIAppKLHyQqPQ44k4CM7gCK4B/s640/angles%2B4.jpg" width="440" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
AND math bands...they are back! Students loosely tape it around their wrists to reference when working on activities...we've also added these as a book in our math notebooks...it's a win win and everyONE loves them and benefits.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dmBRcTBctSU/WNxl4xrg4XI/AAAAAAAABM4/6eE9XQEgnC8rLd-lo5hKqrqj_r50WTOJACK4B/s1600/angles%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dmBRcTBctSU/WNxl4xrg4XI/AAAAAAAABM4/6eE9XQEgnC8rLd-lo5hKqrqj_r50WTOJACK4B/s640/angles%2B2.jpg" width="440" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can find all of these resources in my shop...<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Finding-Complementary-and-Supplementary-Angles-Task-Cards-and-Activities-642217">here</a>!</div>

Eeeeeks! Angles are so awesome and I am soon beyond glad that this is posted.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'll be posting for about it soon in detail but I literally just have to share this with you.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xXcjm7VyLXs/WNa6DhJIOwI/AAAAAAAABLw/VSkocbfGqeojB-TOqG0KaXeRhpnQDLrWgCLcB/s1600/complementary%2Band%2Bsupplementary%2Bangles1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xXcjm7VyLXs/WNa6DhJIOwI/AAAAAAAABLw/VSkocbfGqeojB-TOqG0KaXeRhpnQDLrWgCLcB/s640/complementary%2Band%2Bsupplementary%2Bangles1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Seriously...anything complementary and supplementary angles...it's covered!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
True and False Complementary and Supplementary Angle soooooort </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and Matching Cards...because we gotta mix things up every once in a while, right?!!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gbyp5PuRv5g/WNa6DSdjcHI/AAAAAAAABLs/UTQMLIbh4voDB_YautkZBAZtxTEvolb0gCEw/s1600/complementary%2Band%2Bsupplementary%2Bangles%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gbyp5PuRv5g/WNa6DSdjcHI/AAAAAAAABLs/UTQMLIbh4voDB_YautkZBAZtxTEvolb0gCEw/s640/complementary%2Band%2Bsupplementary%2Bangles%2B3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Ummmm...and a math band...because I can't tell you how many problems I was messing up because supplementary angles tallied up to 190 degrees in my mind. Should have been wearing my math band and I would have been a-ok!</div>

<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Fraction-Puzzles-3060918">Fraction puzzles</a>! I just printed these two to a page (they are full page <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Fraction-Puzzles-3060918">puzzles</a>) and laminated them and store them in a page protector to pull out when we are doing fractions and also reviewing at the end of the year because....#testing #dontremindme #youaremorethanascore</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
ANNNNND I really just need to do a big ol' part blogpost about task mats proclaiming my love for them...but I think it will have to wait until summer</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
SO HERE'S a short version! ;)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Fraction-Task-Mats-Equivalent-Fractions-Mixed-Numbers-Simplifying-3075669">Task Mats</a> are my favorite....they are full page problems. I love them for small groups, scoots, stations, reviews, sample problems and so much more. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've found when I work with my small groups or grabbing a group of students struggling that having one problem in front of them with lots of room to work and show their thinking can make all the difference in the world. So I love them and you will too!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vBxhwuUHQMM/WNM40mO3DpI/AAAAAAAABJs/gKXaT6MWquMT4etPyhMrB6fTBiKbSNSNgCK4B/s1600/Fractions%2B12.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vBxhwuUHQMM/WNM40mO3DpI/AAAAAAAABJs/gKXaT6MWquMT4etPyhMrB6fTBiKbSNSNgCK4B/s400/Fractions%2B12.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3b21KPG0ycY/WNM6ke6BLaI/AAAAAAAABK0/lm7K1PyQco0vQENh1j1N1cU3PlUtpFmXACK4B/s1600/Fractions%2B8.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3b21KPG0ycY/WNM6ke6BLaI/AAAAAAAABK0/lm7K1PyQco0vQENh1j1N1cU3PlUtpFmXACK4B/s200/Fractions%2B8.jpg" width="200" /></a> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ss4wHmH2XXk/WNM6pBG3ExI/AAAAAAAABK8/lsYYt6t46ksVJ8FJSO4cn9ozot0melsdwCK4B/s1600/Fractions%2B9.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ss4wHmH2XXk/WNM6pBG3ExI/AAAAAAAABK8/lsYYt6t46ksVJ8FJSO4cn9ozot0melsdwCK4B/s200/Fractions%2B9.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Because I'm focusing on foundations the <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Fraction-Task-Mats-Equivalent-Fractions-Mixed-Numbers-Simplifying-3075669">task mats</a> cover</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Writing and drawing fractions</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Fractions on a number line</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Simplifying fractions</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Equivalent fractions</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Mixed Numbers and Improper fractions</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There are 10 of each category and really reveal where students stand as to what they understand about fractions.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Happy Pi Day!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We had a great time feasting on some circular goodies...because aren't math holidays the best?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HniQgZyu7vA/WNAqciH_U0I/AAAAAAAAQ6I/kzCqhxAAckMDaM2c60W12xKGXV1vXrd7wCK4B/s1600/pi%2Bday%2Bjoke%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HniQgZyu7vA/WNAqciH_U0I/AAAAAAAAQ6I/kzCqhxAAckMDaM2c60W12xKGXV1vXrd7wCK4B/s640/pi%2Bday%2Bjoke%2B1.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To add some fun to the day I whipped up some silly pi jokes--and I am still collecting more! Aren't these funny? I mean, they might not be funnyfunny...but they should illicit a little chuckle or giggle...let's take a look!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5txm3V9uTaA/WNAqdToHbjI/AAAAAAAAQ64/GpRc9SlvilQTtsrHad0C5CF9mb76pfVtACK4B/s640/pie%2Bday%2Bjoke%2B6.jpg" width="426" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For all the pirate lovers....arrrrrghhh!!! There's a pi joke for you!</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am so excited to share this today. I've had toooooons of fractions on my brain!<br />
Seriously. Overboard on the fractions. BUT I LOVE IT.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Oo2uxYHj_EA/WKi2LeMRyHI/AAAAAAAABEE/o2AnqLWo3EEMCiJWRXlovbnC1mm9_3wiQCK4B/s1600/mixed%2Bnumber%2Bfraction%2Bfree%2Bactivity%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Oo2uxYHj_EA/WKi2LeMRyHI/AAAAAAAABEE/o2AnqLWo3EEMCiJWRXlovbnC1mm9_3wiQCK4B/s640/mixed%2Bnumber%2Bfraction%2Bfree%2Bactivity%2B2.jpg" width="426" /></a><br />
<br />
This is a <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Fraction-Activity-Whats-My-Mixed-Number-3060859" target="_blank">perfect activity</a> whether you are introducing how to change mixed numbers into improper fractions and vice versa AND if it's just a review.<br />
<br />
Did I ever tell you I was afraid of teaching math. Like really. I would study and study and study the first year I taught math and the scariest thing to teach...in my mind...was FRACTIONS.<br />
<br />
I think fractions gave me hives. Just thinking about fractions...it was bad.<br />
<br />
Once I started drawing fractions and talking and thinking about the more in depth I had this huge part of my heart fractioned (haha) off just for the LOVE of FRACTIONS.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2dYhVrS8-7Q/WLeD49_p0dI/AAAAAAAABGY/kMqvP5MlfEIYdRQOaN_45bOjL0ZPvCBugCK4B/s1600/0001.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2dYhVrS8-7Q/WLeD49_p0dI/AAAAAAAABGY/kMqvP5MlfEIYdRQOaN_45bOjL0ZPvCBugCK4B/s400/0001.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
So DRAW fractions, play with fractions, talk about fractions, and write about fractions. Use words like "partitioned" to make everyone think you and your students are all about fancy fractions.<br />
<br />
AND as much as the drawing and all that jazz applies to YOU it also applies to your students.<br />
<br />
I was shocked at how afraid my students were afraid of fractions too. What is it with being afraid of drawing pictures and math? I don't know because pictures are ESSENTIAL!<br />
<br />
ANYWAYS...this activity is just for you to break the ice with fractions and for students to see where a mixed number is in a picture and ALSO where an improper fraction is.<br />
<br />
It's simple and easy and your students take ownership....which is the best. thing. ever.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aln_sNa-y08/WLeDohiDrjI/AAAAAAAABGA/JNlwYQMEYI07o7oVjk7LHqoXu25nuQ5BwCK4B/s1600/mixed%2Bnumber%2Bfraction%2Bactivity3.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aln_sNa-y08/WLeDohiDrjI/AAAAAAAABGA/JNlwYQMEYI07o7oVjk7LHqoXu25nuQ5BwCK4B/s320/mixed%2Bnumber%2Bfraction%2Bactivity3.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Y3Fgugwii9U/WLeDuyupc2I/AAAAAAAABGQ/Zu-wyyhjVE80nvv7xRsKL9YZZo9CYJBLQCK4B/s1600/mixed%2Bnumber%2Bfraction%2Bactivity%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Y3Fgugwii9U/WLeDuyupc2I/AAAAAAAABGQ/Zu-wyyhjVE80nvv7xRsKL9YZZo9CYJBLQCK4B/s320/mixed%2Bnumber%2Bfraction%2Bactivity%2B2.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pnKeWdxRImk/WLeDrU4mXDI/AAAAAAAABGI/whLmpsFqqKY-wHNSFQ1j4vDt4h8fdZ18ACK4B/s1600/mixed%2Bnumber%2Bfraction%2Bactivity1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pnKeWdxRImk/WLeDrU4mXDI/AAAAAAAABGI/whLmpsFqqKY-wHNSFQ1j4vDt4h8fdZ18ACK4B/s320/mixed%2Bnumber%2Bfraction%2Bactivity1.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
Students are given a card with a mixed number--you can have them choose their own or you can create more with a blank template I provided. And if you are feeling wild and crazy then have your students use 10 sided dice to roll for their mixed number (just make sure the numerator is smaller than the denominator). Or just use the cards I provided...because...EASY!<br />
<br />
They need to draw a picture of their fraction. I have my students draw models (circles, squares, rectangles, triangles) that clearly show their fraction. TO me this is super important that they can see both the mixed number annnnnd the improper fraction in their picture. But I'm wild and crazy-ish.<br />
<br />
THEN they need to write their mixed number as an improper fraction.<br />
<br />
After that students write their mixed number and hide it under a nifty little paper flap thing<br />
(help me out here...I can't think of the word).<br />
<br />
To pull everything together and show off our fancy fractions we do a<br />
"GIMME FIVE" go-round the classroom and they find and solve each other's<br />
"WHAT's MY MIXED NUMBER?"<br />
<br />
They turn in both to me and VOILA!<br />
<br />
Is that simple? YES.<br />
I sleep better at night know that my students really know about mixed numbers and improper fractions. You'll sleep better too ;)<br />
<br />
Are these perfect to post out for conferences? YES.<br />
(because do parents remember this stuff? no. well, probably not. so impress them with a cool math display that showcases their child's brilliance and awesomeness.)<br />
<br />
Because I know someone will ask...I have my kids fix any errors prior to turning them in. Mistakes aren't a big deal in my class and it's easy enough to add a model here or just start over. Aren't kids sometimes the best teachers to each other? YES!<br />

It's such a hands on unit and there are so many PATTERNS...that once students figure them out it's easy peasy! Metric Measurement used to be something that kind of wanted me to press the snooze button...buuuut now I really enjoy it because of a few tricks that make my students LOVE learning about the metric system.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Dkuii7BJRn0/WK2MurSyvgI/AAAAAAAABEo/JBNCAXngaYg47-5AfNiW-JOQkrOGVwAKACK4B/s1600/metric%2Bsystem%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1"></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PKRHDjYF-GE/WK2Mv4Tt5UI/AAAAAAAABEw/TCezK2Sk0gIlzvuuY0uFiGOaZ06T1p9_QCK4B/s1600/metric%2Bsystem%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PKRHDjYF-GE/WK2Mv4Tt5UI/AAAAAAAABEw/TCezK2Sk0gIlzvuuY0uFiGOaZ06T1p9_QCK4B/s640/metric%2Bsystem%2B3.jpg" width="426" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
References for students are KEY! There are several that I use because different things click with different students. Seriously the key to success!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Dkuii7BJRn0/WK2MurSyvgI/AAAAAAAABEo/JBNCAXngaYg47-5AfNiW-JOQkrOGVwAKACK4B/s1600/metric%2Bsystem%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Dkuii7BJRn0/WK2MurSyvgI/AAAAAAAABEo/JBNCAXngaYg47-5AfNiW-JOQkrOGVwAKACK4B/s640/metric%2Bsystem%2B4.jpg" width="426" /> </a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We use an assortment of task cards and task mats (they are FULL page problems). We also talk a lot about the metric system and make it relatable. They really love the Numberrock Meter, Liter, and Grams song and theres a rap ((here's a link to the <a href="http://meters liters and grams rap" target="_blank">lyrics</a>)) I bought the song from somewhere...maybe iTunes? Or somewhere online. It's always a hit. I recommend skipping the music video it's pretty dated.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Dkuii7BJRn0/WK2MurSyvgI/AAAAAAAABEo/JBNCAXngaYg47-5AfNiW-JOQkrOGVwAKACK4B/s1600/metric%2Bsystem%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1"></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZXnJ7co7Zw4/WK2MyJvM3xI/AAAAAAAABE4/iG9zXGudxuA-hOnbMRvN_RO81SS8chrdwCK4B/s1600/metric%2Bmeasurement1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZXnJ7co7Zw4/WK2MyJvM3xI/AAAAAAAABE4/iG9zXGudxuA-hOnbMRvN_RO81SS8chrdwCK4B/s640/metric%2Bmeasurement1.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Seriously...all the metric measurement reference sheets</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Dkuii7BJRn0/WK2MurSyvgI/AAAAAAAABEo/JBNCAXngaYg47-5AfNiW-JOQkrOGVwAKACK4B/s1600/metric%2Bsystem%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1"></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZXnJ7co7Zw4/WK2MyJvM3xI/AAAAAAAABE4/iG9zXGudxuA-hOnbMRvN_RO81SS8chrdwCK4B/s1600/metric%2Bmeasurement1.jpg" imageanchor="1"></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nXD_y0cvtJQ/WK2M32qN2uI/AAAAAAAABFA/09aaX5ztL0s0gp8grxo553ruw_e0cn1EwCK4B/s1600/metric%2Bsystem%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nXD_y0cvtJQ/WK2M32qN2uI/AAAAAAAABFA/09aaX5ztL0s0gp8grxo553ruw_e0cn1EwCK4B/s640/metric%2Bsystem%2B2.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Activities to practice...that are fun!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I have a to be read list a mile long and I add to it faster than I read books on it. Anyone else?!<br />
<br />
This year I wanted to create a visual reading log for my students and the idea stemmed from my summer reading log. I had a few friends comment on how cool it was and then I decided--duh! this is the reading log for me! It really turns into a work of art and I'm already dreaming of the end of year reading logs...what a way to display what you read!<br />

<br />
You can find this is my store as well as some reading snapshots (the coolest reading Polaroids ever) for students to display what they've read for parent nights and such!<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MWIWkytRlgw/V9hSQ2BHjII/AAAAAAAABCM/IcvYuJQfGAc1nIvklcQcocnRqs3uhrUdACK4B/s1600/classroom%2Bcommunity.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MWIWkytRlgw/V9hSQ2BHjII/AAAAAAAABCM/IcvYuJQfGAc1nIvklcQcocnRqs3uhrUdACK4B/s640/classroom%2Bcommunity.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Whether it's the beginning of the school year or anytime in the middle--this is one of my favorite activities to do with students.<br />
<br />
As much as school is about reading, writing, math, science, social studies, PE, art, music, and all the subjects--<b>it's even more about the relationships that students build with their peers.</b><br />
<br />
No classroom is perfect because we are all learning! <b>We start off with FRIENDSHIP TOWERS.</b><br />
<br />
At first I have some building blocks (you can use Jenga blocks, unifix cubes, really anything that you can build with) and we talk about what makes a great friend by asking questions like:<br />
<b>What do great friends do?</b><br />
<b>What do they sound like?</b><br />
<b>What do they look like? (as in actions)</b><br />
<b>What do they make you feel like?</b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sUzIfpVFVpM/V9hSVCzBnCI/AAAAAAAABCU/uSgGM-LE3O8RIxCWwTMkO6aNYSKcGeqXQCK4B/s1600/classroom%2Bcommunity%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sUzIfpVFVpM/V9hSVCzBnCI/AAAAAAAABCU/uSgGM-LE3O8RIxCWwTMkO6aNYSKcGeqXQCK4B/s640/classroom%2Bcommunity%2B2.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
And with each response I build a tower. I have my students write down key terms that they say and add to their "Friendship Tower" page. A freebie printable is at the end of this post for you to use because #yourock.<br />
<br />
Then I talk about how all friends aren't perfect...and I take away a few blocks.<br />
<br />
We discuss how this doesn't mean that a friendship is over, it just means that <b>you have to keep building.</b><br />
<br />
Now sometimes something might happen where you feel your friendship tower has been completely destroyed. Sadsville. We discuss cirmcumstances like this because students will encounter this--it's real life y'all.<br />
<br />
BUT then we talk about how it's okay to rebuild and refortify your friendship and how it is totally possible!<br />
<br />
Then students get to build their own friendship towers and <b>encourage one another and cheer each other on</b> for the "coooolest tower" or the "tallest tower" or the "funkiest tower" and so on.<br />
<br />

<br />
I'm allllll about simplicity with a big impact and my students alllllllways love this one. JUST had to share! Will you try this? I think you should! Let me know how it goes in the comments.<br />
